On My Mind this Wednesday Morning: I Love Yous

Old photos of K's mom & dad

Lately I've been thinking about how often I tell those closest to me how much I love and appreciate them. Growing up, I never doubted my parent's love. There were so many hugs, kisses and I love yous that I always felt secure in their view of me. Even today each phone call or meeting with my family ends with an I love you. I tell my husband daily how I love him, but usually only once a day. I know some people feel that over-using the phrase makes it less meaningful, and I can see that logic. But ever since we lost K's mom in September, I can't help but feel differently. Sometimes I think about all the things I wish I had said and the conversations I wish we had spoken, the small and the large -- of what she would say about our first house, of hearing her opinion on painting the rooms, of her reminiscing of their journeys out west, of listening to her wisdom, of her words to our first little one -- and it absolutely breaks my heart.

So all of that to say that I firmly believe in telling your loved ones just how precious they are, even at the risk of sounding sappy and redundant. Because you really never know which path life will take and what precious opportunities you may never have.

What a sweet post. I am really good at telling my husband and kids how much I love and adore them, but slack in the parental department. I always tell my dad before he goes overseas, and I do tell my mom, but it's so awkward. They know I love them... they could probably hear it more often though. Thanks for the reminder! :)

What a beautiful post! I love that you had so many "I love your" growing up, as did I, my family is amazing and I never had to question the love either! I don't think it can ever be overused if you mean it! <3 Such a great reminder and lovely inspiration! :)

I was talking on Skype with my 90 year old grandmother yesterday and thought about the same thing when I got off the phone. I can't say it enough, but cause I mean it that much! What a lovely post. My heart hurts for all the loss.

hi sweet friend! i can totally relate to wishing and thinking about things you'd wished you'd said or done with lost loved ones. it is so painful. i agree that it is so important to let people know that you care, with that said... i LOVE you.

I love this post, and I LOVE you too!!! I agree - I am the queen of dropping the L-bomb, and every conversation with my mom, g-ma, and husband end in an "I love you."
