Pretty in Pink

It's that time of year again when we all begin looking forward to crisp fall days and the new wardrobe options that they promise. Unfortunately, the southern summer heat will make you sweat just thinking about tweed or sweaters. As much as I long to pull out my favorite fall pieces, I'm trying to make due with what recently seems like an uninspiring summer wardrobe. Luckily, this dress never fails to shine through. The watercolor print and silky fabric pair equally well with long fall sweaters and breezy summer layers.

Keeping it Casual

Since my weeks are now full of dress pants, deadlines, white coats and presentations, my weekend outfits have been trending on the casual side. This past weekend I basically lived in this oh-so-soft-and-comfortable jersey dress that worked equally well for daytime errand running and for late afternoon dates.

Blending In

I realized when sorting through these pictures that my outfit camouflages well with the orangey-brown of the leaves and brick surrounding me. Nonetheless, I love the feeling of fall/winter that this outfit brought to me this past weekend. Not to mention that this dress was a total steal from Urban. {50% off all sale on Black Friday. Yes, I am crazy, but it paid off!}I love that it can be either dressed up with heels or worn casually with flat boots. Stay tuned for that post in the next couple weeks.

Winter Work

When it comes to winter dresses, I typically just layer tights and cardigans over sleeveless silk pieces and let my wool coat do all of the work. Lately, however, I have taken a turn toward dresses that are more specific to the colder months. {This one is a new favorite.} Although it won't get really cold here until February, I pulled out this winter favorite of mine this past weekend. The amazingly soft flannel-esque fabric and muted jewel tones make it a perfect winter companion.

Baby, Put on That Party Dress

I don't usually need an excuse to get dressed up. In fact, I've been known to wear stilettos to the grocery store for no particular reason. However, there is something about holiday parties that makes me a bit giddy. Maybe it's the glitter, the sequins, or the sweetheart necklines of my favorite fancy dresses. Or maybe it's just the warm buzz of being around some of my favorite people. Either way, these party dress picks will have you looking chic whether you're attending an office party, a family gathering, or a swanky soirée.

A Grey Sky Morning

I've been doing quite a bit of layering lately to keep up with the weather changes. Socks over tights, vests over cardigans. Not that I mind, really. Layering is definitely one of my favorite ways to spice up an outfit as well as a practical way to stay warm or cool according to your surroundings. I wore these layers last weekend for a Sunday morning & afternoon out with the husband.

All Bundled Up

The term "sweater dress" has never really been appealing to me for whatever reason. I tend to think of sweaters as bulky, over-sized pieces that pair well with jean leggings and tall boots (or more recently, with shorts). Enter this dress, and my opinion completely changed. There's really nothing outstanding about it, but I love it. Cozy, warm, and suitable for dressing up. Now I'm thinking about transitioning those long, bulky sweaters into dresses as well.....

Southern Comfort

This past weekend husband and I attended a lovely outdoor wedding near Hilton Head, South Carolina. The weather was sunny and warm with a slight breeze that felt wonderful in the shade. The ceremony and reception were held outdoors in front of a beautiful lake with yellow and orange leaves and miniature pumpkins scattered among the grass.

Since we had a four hour car ride and the wedding was at 1:00, I opted for low-maintenance (read: comfortable and not prone to wrinkles) dress in fall colors and a simple short-sleeved cardigan. Also, to avoid the awkward heel-stuck-in-the-grass dilemma, I chose wedge heels over stilettos and dressed up the simple ensemble with a bit of sparkle and a vintage clutch.

Safety (Pin) Net

With (early) morning temperatures requiring a light jacket and daily highs in the low 90s, summer is officially winding down in the southeast. In fact, today is the first official day of autumn! As a small celebration of fall, I decided that layering was a necessity this past weekend, even if it was in the form of lightweight dresses. This safety pin print tunic is fast becoming a favorite of mine as it works equally well as a dress and as a top tucked into a high waisted skirt.

Summer Skin

With the oppressive southern heat still in full effect, it has become difficult for me to wear anything besides breezy, lightweight dresses like the one below. I did manage to thrown on a short-sleeved cardigan and some booties for a while this past weekend during an overcast morning, which was a welcome change. The only down side of the gray skies was that they served to solidify my desire to trade out summer for crisp autumn air and brightly colored tights.

Moody Magenta

When I was in college I went through a phase where I refused to wear any bright colors. My wardrobe consisted only of neutrals and quite a bit of black. I'm not quite sure what prompted this self-imposed limitation, but I am glad to have gotten past it. While I am still drawn first to greys and blush tones, I have managed to overcome my aversion to color.

This magenta dress is the perfect combination of ladylike and playful with the silk ruffles and conservative neckline. The pattern adds a bit of texture to the ensemble and will pair well with black tights for the cooler weather.

Here's looking forward to fall.

A, B, C, Easy as 1, 2, 3

I am not generally a fan of clothing with words or letters, but something about this dress pulled me in. Although I tend to stay away from long skirts as they typically make me look shorter, I think there is a certain charm to this dress. It may not be the most flattering piece in my wardrobe, but it's comfortable and breezy. Two things that are an absolute must in this scorching southern heat.
