Birthdays + Marraige

Today is my husband's birthday.

I just have to tell you that I simply couldn't live without this guy. He is so strong and supportive of me and our little family, even when I have the worst attitude and feel completely overwhelmed with life. Motherhood is a difficult transition, but this man of mine has stood next to me, supported me and encouraged me even on my darkest days. He takes care of me in ways that are expected of a leader, but also in ways that are quiet and small and often unseen. It is these that I am most grateful for.

I would not want to share this life or this amazing journey of marriage and parenting with anyone else.

Happy birthday K.

Thirty-two

Today is my thirty second birthday.

Not gonna lie, just typing that made me feel pretty old. Something about becoming a mom {maybe lack of sleep?} makes this year feel different. This year I can finally feel the distance between my life and that of my twenty-something friends. I actually mentioned to one of them the other day that I feel every bit of my thirty two years this year. And while part of me is nostalgic for those feelings of freedom and possibility, I wouldn't want to go back. Thirty and thirty one were some of my happiest years, and I know that there are so many happy memories in this next year just waiting to be made.

So here's to another year, a life that looks totally different than it did one or two years ago, being a supportive wife and an encouraging mama. Here's to a life so full of love that it overflows all around,  one full of adventure and awe, one that writes a beautiful story of grace and mercy.

Here's to thirty two.

A Weekend in Pictures

This past weekend went by in a blur of laughter and stories, baby smiles and squeals, so much good food, two parties for two sweet babes, porch swings, and wonderful moments with friends.
So so good.

A Special Birthday Wish...

to the one woman in my life who...

... is always there with an encouraging word
.... will tell you the honest truth, even when it is difficult to hear
... sat up into the early morning hours with me as I studied in college
... clapped the loudest at my pharmacy school graduation
... is always ready to give a gift 'just because'
... has always been an amazing role model -- as a mom, a wife, and a strong woman
... is the most caring and thoughtful grandmother I know
... embraces people into her life and family as if they were always a part of it
... is the perfect partner in crime when it comes to Anthropologie or antique store dates
... I can't imagine life without.

Happy birthday mama.

Weekend Adventure: Standing Indian Campground 2013

It's taken me quite a while to post these pictures, but looking at them again reminded me how much I love our annual camping trip to Standing Indian in North Carolina. Since husband and I both have birthdays in October, we have made it a tradition to spend three or four nights at Standing Indian Campground for the last four years. The agenda is low-key, with a couple good hikes, a sunrise on the mountainside and plenty of campfires. This year was no exception.

We left on a Friday and spent three nights at the campground. Saturday morning we made a delicious breakfast and headed out to one of our favorite hikes with an amazing view, Albert Mountain. There is an old fire tower at the very top of the mountain that provides an incredible 360 degree view of the mountain range. The fall colors were so beautiful!

{Sambo was really cold so we bought him a child's sweatshirt in an attempt to keep him warm. Needless to say, he didn't like it very much.}

Sunday morning we went for a sunrise hike* along a ridge line that followed the AT. It was only three miles in to a perfect opening on the edge of the mountain. The sky was a beautiful crisp blue, and the sun was peeking through the clouds. We shared coffee and trail mix and sat for a while just enjoying the scenery and each other. It was perfect. After we returned from our hike, my family came up for lunch and birthday pumpkin mousse pie. My nephews had a great time chasing Sam around the trails, picking up leaves and sticks and playing in the river.

Sunday morning we made breakfast and warmed ourselves by the fire before packing up and heading home. Just like the previous years, it was the perfect weekend getaway to regroup and refocus, spending time in creation and enjoying the peace and serenity of each other's company. We sat by our campfire at night and talked about raising children, living healthy lives, new research and hypotheses in cancer origins and treatment, changes we want to make in our own lives. It always makes me so thankful for a husband that I can connect with, from the incredibly meaningful to the trivial and conversational. I wouldn't want to brave this world with anyone else by my side.

--------------

*A sunrise hike usually goes like this....
Alarm goes off, it's pitch black so we hit snooze. Fifteen minutes later it goes off again, so husband climbs out of the covers and turns on the propane heater. We hit snooze again. Fifteen minutes later, the alarm is ringing a third time, so husband gets up, turns off the alarm. changes clothes and leaves the tent to go make coffee. Sambo and I continue to sleep snugly under the warm covers and next to the heater. Sometime in the next fifteen to twenty minutes Sambo makes his way to the top of the air mattress and snuggles down in the space that husband vacated. When husband comes back to peek his head in the tent and tell me that coffee is ready and he is warming the truck, Sam and I finally make our way out of bed. The tent is warm from the propane heater, and when I get dressed, I find that my hiking boots have already been placed in the truck beneath the heaters in the floorboard. Sam and I exit the tent and climb into the warmed truck, and husband hands me a mug of steaming coffee. It's still pitch black outside, but we are warm and excited about the hike ahead and the gorgeous sunrise on the horizon.

Lately, Around Here...

birthdays, lunch with sweet families, trail races, puppy dog cuddles, birthday carrot cake, black coffee, spiced tea & cool afternoons reading on the porch...

This has been a busy and slightly stressful week, if we're being honest, but one that is definitely going out with a bang. Yesterday was husband's birthday, so today we are headed up to the mountains for a weekend getaway. I've packed up three days worth of good food {complete with a couple of birthday treats}, lots of firewood and warm clothes, and a couple good books. We are looking forward to cold mornings with hot coffee, watching the sunrise on the side of the mountain, reading by the campfire in the afternoons, the beautiful colors of fall that can only be fully enjoyed in the midst of nature.

{Poor Sambo had his dewclaw removed but is now back to his normal adventurous self}

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Birthday Celebrations

{sweet flowers from husband, GF chocolate cake that husband made!}

Today is my birthday and the beginning of my favorite time of year. Our October {and early November!} schedule is packed full of adventures, outings and dinners with friends. The mornings are cool enough to require a light sweater, and the leaves are starting to turn colors.

Since we had this past weekend to ourselves, husband took me to some of my favorite places in Athens as a birthday treat. We started early with breakfast at Mama's Boy and then headed over to check out the Athens Farmers Market. The produce was beautiful, the bread smelled amazing, and we stumbled upon some delicious smelling coffee made via hand pour while we were talking about switching to the hand pour method*. Kismet, I tell ya. We were also able to meet and talk to the owner of B&G Stables, a local farm producing grass-fed beef and humanely raised pork.

{bleary-eyed before my coffee, egg scramble with spinach/tomato/goat cheese + cheese grits + salted spring mix}
{farmer's market favorites: delicious coffees, lovely blooms, vibrant veggies}

We finished off the morning with a quick trip to Trader Joe's** for some weekly supplies and some pumpkins {naturally}, followed by a stop at the apple orchard. We filled our buckets with Jonagolds, Cameos and Fujis fresh from Blue Ridge, Georgia, and I happened upon some fresh herbs that I need for herbal cold and flu remedies {more on that soon!}.

We spent out afternoon at home, cleaning and organizing, ate GF chocolate cake that husband made, went for an afternoon walk, and watched Parenthood on the couch. It was the perfect way to spend a birthday. Funny how different our celebrations were ten years ago, ha! Hope you had a wonderful weekend! Here's to a great week!

*Side note, hand pour is how they make coffee in Panama. Locals don't have electricity or electric coffee pots or even french presses. And the coffee we drank in Panama, and brought back with us, is hands down the best I've ever had.

**I actually enjoy grocery shopping. Filling my cart and subsequently my fridge with whole, healthy foods for the week just makes me feel good.

A Surprise Sixty

 A few photos from my father's surprise sixtieth birthday party we threw a couple weekends ago. It was a low-key celebration filled with old family photos, all his favorite foods {including the peanut butter chocolate cupcakes from my wedding}, lots of friends and family, and plenty of laughter. It was so much fun to try and surprise that guy. We actually had it pulled off until he pulled into the driveway!

{^^blueberry bushes from me and my sister with sweet notes from my nephews^^}

 {^^suprise! and the year I dressed up as my father for Halloween^^}

I'm a lucky gal to have such a great dad.

30 Before 30*

*Not to be confused with 30 for 30, which is something else entirely.

{via}

I'm not really big on resolutions, but I love the idea of setting goals and charting my progress toward those goals. Since 2011 brings a little over a year and a half before I turn thirty, I decided to go ahead and make a bucket list of sorts. Inspired by my sweet friend Lesley, here's a list of things that I hope plan to accomplish in the next 1&1/2 years. Some are frivolous, some concrete and tangible, while others are lifestyle and attitude changes, but they are all important to me in their own way...

1. Complete a sprint triathlon
2. Read the bible from cover to cover
3. Take yoga classes regularly
4. Take a road trip out west with my husband
5. Climb the Teton Mountains
6. Find a girlfriend to run and do races with
7. Learn to play the piano
8. Do more things that scare me
9. Develop a mission statement for my life
10. Simplify & minimize our home without sacrificing our personalities and comforts
11. Make cornbread like my mother's at least once
12. Take my mother and sister on a trip, just the three of us
13. Give back to my community, wherever that may be
14. Drink less coffee and more tea
15. Go backpacking for more than one night
16. Go camping with my family & with husband's family
17. Develop a working closet & a wardrobe that I truly love
18. Make intentional time for my girlfriends
19. Tell my husband one thing every day that I love about him
20. Complete a half marathon
21. Complete this race wearing my Vibram FiveFingers & improve upon last year's time
22. Take my husband to New York City in the spring time
23. Complain less and encourage more
24. Camp on the beach
25. Go surfing, preferably in the Outer Banks of North Carolina
26. Buy a pair of Hunter wellies {Husband gave me a pair for my birthday!}
27. Take a trip to the beach & savor every moment
28. Be fearless
29. Live a more centered, peaceful life
30. Be a loving, supportive, and godly wife

What is on your bucket list?

Twenty Eight

Today I turn another year older and begin my twenty-eighth year of life. I am blessed beyond my wildest dreams by an incredibly loving husband, a supportive family, and wonderful friends. Sadly, as we get older, birthdays must be fit around everything else happening in life, and this year is no exception. Luckily, I have managed time for a few small celebrations of birthdays, friendship, and fall in general.

1. Asparagus-Gruyere Tart & homemade pumpkin pie shared with the one I love the most. (Seasonal recipes are my favorite!)

2. A shopping and coffee date with my bestie, who just happens to have the same birthday.

3. A girl's night in, complete with fall-inspired cupcakes (I'm thinking pumpkin!), girlie movies, and spiked cider.

4. Apple and pumpkin picking. (And then baking something delicious with said apples and pumpkins.)

5. Dinner and a movie with my mom and sister. It's our birthday tradition.

Happy fall, ya'll
xoxo
